State of the art leisure centre to boost local community’s fitness and wellbeing

State of the art leisure centre to boost local community’s fitness and wellbeing

“The best piece of public realm construction…

…in the city of Bradford,” is how Councillor Ralph Berry described the new Sedbergh Sports Facility, where DB3 were appointed as Architect and Building Services Design engineer on behalf of City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council:

  • Housing state of the art sport and leisure facilities
  • Modern and energy efficient environment
  • Attracting more than double gym members than its predecessor.

The brief

We were asked to create a new, high quality wet and dry sport and leisure facility providing for and encouraging Sport and Physical Activity for a diverse community with a wide range of interests and abilities throughout the Bradford district and beyond. The site was a recreation ground and part of the work was to also improve the quality and playability of the sports pitches.

The facilities

The facilities

The outcome is a leisure centre complex that caters for a number of sports and activities boasting the following facilities:

  • 6 lane 25m swimming pool with a wheelchair access lift
  • 12.5 x 8m learner pool with movable floor
  • Wet change village and group change
  • 8 court sports hall with dry change
  • Large 80 station gym area with state of the art equipment
  • 2 dance/flexible studios
  • Spinning studio
  • Meeting room
  • Large reception & entrance foyer
  • Staff facilities and admin spaces
  • Outdoor changing with direct access to external pitches and facilities.

Considerations for the design

Considerations for the design

The design was based on a simple efficient plan that provides access to all key spaces from a circulation street spanning nearly 2/3 of the length of the south elevation. The layout is very intuitive and from the entrance visitors get views into the pool hall and to the first floor fitness spaces helping them to orientate themselves within the building.

The sports hall and plant spaces are to the rear of the building. The south facing glazed façade is shaded by a wide covered external public space where users can enjoy the surroundings.

The double pitched form encapsulates the large volume of the sports hall and the external plant space thus reducing the impact of the building on the nearby residential properties. The following additional factors were also taken into account by the design:

  • An efficient and simple over-arching structure encompasses all accommodation
  • The layout was developed to take best advantage of the existing mature trees on the site
  • Building outlook is South to views over sports pitches
  • Building roof form developed to provide external covered viewing from outside of main entrance
  • Roof form disguises the large mass of the sports hall
  • Glazing to South elevation is shaded by louvres and overhang give depth to the elevation
  • Low level glazing allows controlled views in/out of pool hall
  • Materials chosen to fit with park-like setting
  • Requirements of privacy provide bold interventions within the glazed South elevation
  • Modern and energy efficient environment making it cost effective to heat.

A sporting reception

A sporting reception

We are delighted that the new centre has made an incredibly positive impact on the community, already attracting approximately 3,700 gym members in its first few months of opening. This is more than double the amount of gym members than its predecessor Richard Dunn Centre had.
