DarntonB3 is appointed to lead a multidisciplinary design team, acting as Architect and Lead Consultant for all RIBA stages from concept design, through construction to completion.
This mixed use development in Pontypridd comprises 11,000 sq m of office accommodation together with a library, gym, one stop shop, and A3 café units as well as two new pedestrian streets and a riverside walkway. A new footbridge links the development to Ynysangharad Park. We are appointed to lead a multi-disciplinary design team from RIBA Stage 2 to completion. The design team was novated to the successful contractor at Stage 4. The building is forecast to achieve BREEAM Excellent and is designed to BIM Level 2.
The project seeks to regenerate Pontypridd town centre by bringing skilled jobs and also by high quality urban design.
The proximity of the development to the River Taff and the William Edwards bridge (a Scheduled Ancient Monument) has required detailed consultation with numerous stakeholders including CADW, local business, conservation and access groups and NRW.
We therefore prepared a consultation plan together with a pre-application consultation pack, and hosted the consultation responses on our website before preparing a Pre -Application Consultation report. We hosted a public consultation and submitted the scheme for review by the Design Council for Wales. We also prepared several visualizations and a flythrough to allow RCT to market the offices.
The design comprises 2 buildings arranged on an east – west axis linking Pontypridd’s main shopping street with the River Taff. Food retail and Café units provide interest at street level with office accommodation above.
A third building accommodates a library, gym and council one stop shop and provides a curvilinear counterpoint.
