The Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) scheme was introduced in 2007 as a voluntary standard to improve the overall sustainability of new homes in England. Since 2008 all new homes in England and Wales have had to be code rated with public sector housing achieving at least level 3. All CSH rated projects must be independently assessed by a licensed CSH assessor. The aim of the Code assessment is to give a whole home rating of sustainability by marking against nine different categories. Topics from the construction, use, adaptability and environmental impact are taken into consideration. The code levels represent incremental percentage improvements above the requirements of the current Part L Building Regulations and falls in line with the Governments objective of Zero Carbon Homes by 2016. Mandatory levels of compliance for public and private sector housing are planned to increase until 2016. At Darnton B3 Architecture we have a licensed CSH Assessor and a team that can advise on how best to achieve particular code ratings. Our advice is based on our experience of designing and building to code standards. Early appointment of CSH Assessor services can greatly increase the scoring potential of the project as points can be missed if early processes and consultations are not engaged.
